Sustainable and Energy Efficient battery solutions for the RIS EV market
The transport industry contributes to more than 25% of the world’s energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions. Road transport accounts for over 70% of the sector’s emissions. The need for energy stability and to tackle climate change has led to the promotion of electromobility. However, its market share is still small due to undeveloped battery technology. Electrical Vehicles (EVs) are less appealing because of their limited range and expensive upfront prices, while the main problem is their autonomy.
The limited availability of charging infrastructure is another obstacle to the adoption of electromobility. Therefore, there is a clear market need for a novel battery, offering both low charging time and low weight. On top of the above, Critical Raw Materials (CRM) included in the batteries face a supply-demand gap and it is time for the EU to adopt the CRM Act to ensure a diverse and reliable supply.
EVBAT will address the above by upscaling a novel swappable power unit, weighing 7 kg less than the lightest EV batteries, and thus reducing charging time rendering it portable and suitable for mobility, but also for a variety of household and industrial applications. The design of the POD offers a 20% increase in CRM recovery due to the assembly process. When the POD’s capacity drops down to 80%, its cells are effortlessly disassembled & moved to the swapping station for 2nd life usage, leading to savings of up to 50% of the total Li and Co needed for EVBAT production in the coming years.
Within the EVBAT project, HYBA will demonstrate the technology on Vent-Motο’s scooter being also the main technology provider and commercial partner, converting as an equity the EVBAT investment. Last RTU and SEC will assess the environmental impact and cover dissemination and education activities.
