Safe, sustainable and high performance adhesives and coatings from industrial softwood bark

“SuperBark enables the development of ≥ 95% biobased adhesives and coatings using bark components that meet the performance, safety, and sustainability standards demanded by the industry and consumers. This project will be ensured through a multidisciplinary approach, including 1) the valorization of industrial conifer bark using patented alkaline extraction technology, 2) the utilization of extracted bark polyphenols to produce adhesives for engineered wood products, 3) the conversion of cellulose-rich products from bark waste into cellulose nanofibers used as functional components in laminate and paper packaging coatings, 4) the integration of digital technologies in process design, system dynamics modeling, and data analysis to accelerate adhesive and coating development and assess technical, socio-economic, and market opportunities, and 5) the development of adhesives and coatings based on safe and sustainable construction principles defined by the Joint Research Centre (2022), which have been tested and approved for recyclability and/or biodegradability in the relevant environment.”
