Research and innovation based solutions to support the peat sector's transition to a climate neutral economy, promoting the sustainable use of Latvia's natural resources
PeatTransform is an ambitious project of cooperation between Latvian scientific institutions and industry that aims to ensure scientifically based, sustainable, and climate-neutral development of the peat sector, combining the most modern research methods, innovations, and practical solutions. The project studies greenhouse gas emissions in depth and develops emission factors suitable for Latvian conditions; develops approaches for the restoration of degraded peat extraction sites, including floodplain cultivation, hydrological restoration, and agrovoltaics; and creates new bio-based materials and circulation solutions for the replacement and reuse of peat substrates. At the same time, a socio-economic analysis of the sector is carried out, assessing its importance for regional development, employment, and policy planning, to create a balanced, knowledge-based transition to climate neutrality and strengthen Latvia’s competitiveness in the bioeconomy.
